During this past year we have been writing a book regarding our 10 years living and working in the Republic of Panama called “The Bloody Truth about Living and Working in Panama”.  Most articles or books about the nation you find today are simple pieces focused on promotional perspectives; selling real estate, tourism or the glorious retirement and expat lifestyle available in Panama. Very few published works give balance to the number of downsides that also come with living or working here.

With the recent advent of the “Panama Papers” which involves the theft and distribution of 11.4 million documents from the law-firm MOSSACK & FONSECA, we feel immediate responsibility to publish this work so as to correct the many errors and false information we see in the mountains of publicity surrounding these documents in recent weeks.

Panama is no pure democracy nor beacon of liberty and justice “for all”. True justice is a many splendored thing in this small yet diverse country of less than 4 million citizens. Like anywhere, money can buy justice, or the miscarriage thereof. Right now what we are seeing in the debacle called the “Panama Papers” is the greatest challenge to justice and the sovereignty of Panama in the history of this small but important country.

It is our intent through this booklet to speedily reply to false media reports that are denigrating the reputation of Panama as a sovereign nation.  Panama is nowhere near the biggest “tax haven” in the world.  Its criminal elements and levels of corruption are not the worst in Latin America, though the criminals who stole this data are trying to make Panama appear the biggest den of thieves in the world.

Due to international political pressures, Panamanian leadership seems bent on surrendering its sovereignty by releasing all private and confidential resources they rule over and which are protected by their constitution.  They now say every foreigner, investor or corporation who have entrusted Panama with their assets and registrations of corporate entities for the last 100+ years should now be required to go public with their holdings.  We know this has, and will continue to, impact the economy of Panama negatively at many different levels. As usual, it will be the majority poor and uneducated Panamanians who will end up the hardest hit victims of these careless acts of surrender to global threats against their country.

We believe that the true criminals that should be exposed in the Panama Papers affair are those who stole the data, the media companies that conspire to illegally distribute them without permission, and those countries that would hypocritically point fingers and accuse Panama of doing something illegal.  These crimes have been committed against a sovereign Panama, its legal system, its global clientele and ultimately its citizens.

This booklet strives to define the issues from a more fair and balanced perspective based on realities of what makes up the legal system, economy and GNP of the sovereign Panamanian state. If this balance of justice is not recovered soon, we believe Panama will be set back decades compared to all its recent gains in development and modernization. We hope our readers and leaders who might come to their senses through this publication will join us in pushing for fair and just treatment of Panama and its global financial service sectors, protecting the rights of all.

Now on to “the rest of the story”…
